PSL: Sentinel AU

Danny is Steve's guide. He is still pretty new at it and working with a Sentinel who has some bad experiences. To top if off, while working a case in Portland he finds out that a guide can have more than one Sentinel who is their perfect match.

Danny glances at Eliot and he suspects Steve will find out anyway if Danny doesn't tell him.

"That lead I told you about. I went to check it out. They were about to execute someone so I had to step in without backup. And there were more of them than I had counted." He pauses for a second. "Eliot stepped in. Took them out. We had to lie and say I got lucky so that he didn't have to go to the station. So if you get any questions about how good of a shot I am..."

Panic surges through him. "Jesus, Danny! Are you okay?" Being this far away from Danny, not being there to be his back-up when he clearly needed it, is grating on his nerves. He reminds himself that Danny's on the phone with him. He can hear the other man's steady heart beat, Eliot's too. They're fine. They're both fine.

Steve pinches the bridge of his nose in frustration. Thank goodness, Eliot had been stalking him. "Yeah, I get it. Your a regular sharp-shooter." Steve lets out a rush of air. "Tell Eliot that I appreciate his assistance. He okay?" Just because Eliot didn't do it for him doesn't mean he's not grateful. "Really Danny, how many times have you lectured me about back-up?"

"Easy, Steve, easy. I am right here, I am fine. Got a bump that is all. Eliot's good at that. Damn good. And he's fine too. Except that he won't let me have my doughnuts. Apperently they are crap he says." Frustrated with Danny and with the distance to Hawaii, but fine. "I don't think I need to tell him. I think he can hear you." He glances over with a smile.

"I know, Steve, I know. You're a bad influence. But there is a difference storming into a house we have surrounded where we can just wait for backup and going in to save someone they are about to kill."

"Donuts are crap, Danny, we tell you that all the time!" There's still panic and worry in his voice but there's relief too. He wants Danny in front of him so that he can see and feel for himself, to check this bump and make sure it really is of no concern. Until that happens he knows the worry won't fully abate. "I know, but it seems rude to have a conversation with him while on the phone with you. But, yeah, I can hear him too."

Steve sighs out more tension and shakes his head, almost thankful for the familiarity of the argument. "I don't go in without reason. You know that. There's times though that the wait or putting HPD in danger isn't worth the continued risk." As the argument shifts some of that tension returns. "The difference is being able to handle what you find on the other side. What good would it have been for them to have killed you too, huh? You can't save anyone if you are dead, Danny!"

"Good t'know at least one of you has some damn sense," Eliot rumbles, not quite under his breath and definitely loud enough for a man who can hear his heartbeat from the other end of the phone line to hear. He gives Danny A Look, both eyebrows raised, because he's no kind of happy with the dumbass having taken that risk either. If he hadn't been stalking his ass he'd have been dead.

"You wouldn't be saying that if you knew Steve. I think he tries to set some sort of record for visits at the local hospital." But he smiles.

"I know, Steve. But the HPD know danger is part of the job. I promise you that. I've never met a cop who wasn't aware of the risk we're taking. In Hawaii or in Jersey."

It always amuses Steve when someone says he's the sensible one of the two of them. That will come back up at a later time. His amusement is short lived though with Danny's comment. "Hey! That's not true. I avoid the hospital as much as possible!" There's no denial of his actions but since his sentinel senses came back online hospitals are nearly intolerable. The smell alone is enough to make him zone, let alone the noise.

"The risks are different. They're not used to working with a SEAL. They can't anticipate what I'm going to do or know how to respond appropriately when I do. Makes it dangerous for them. You and the team on the hand are far better equipped to provide back up. And Danny, I don't go in without at least having one of you there. Going in alone... Please don't do that again."

Danny's smile fades and he becomes serious. "I know, Steve. I won't." But he doesn't promise because there might come a time when he has to. For Grace or one of the Ohana. "I didn't know how to respond to your whole SEAL thing either."

He settles in a little more comfortably. "How's Hawaii? How's the team?"

Steve smirks thinking back to one of their first conversations. "Yeah but you learned when to duck!" At times he wonders if Danny knows just how much those conversations impacted Steve, adjusted his behavior and gave him a sense of grounding.

The lack of promise doesn't go unnoticed, but he will take what he can get.

"Well we had pizza for lunch... Hawaiian style." The teasing grin should easily be heard in his voice. "All is well. Still quiet. Chin did the upgrade on the table earlier. There's new features apparently but I haven't really taken a look yet." Small pause. "You planning to stay the week still? Spend some time with Eliot before your weekend with Grace?" The question is asked easily with no signs of concern or trepidation.

Danny shudders at the mention of pineapple on pizza. It is an abomination if you ask him. And he knows Steve's just saying that to get him riled up. "Why? Pineapple is a fruit, it doesn't belong on pizza?"

He glances over at Eliot. "If he wants me to stay yeah. I was thinking of coming back late Thursday. That way you and I get some time before Grace comes over."

"It does in Hawaii, Danno." Steve chuckles lightly, and then more for Eliot's amusement he adds, "You need to embrace Hawaii, Danny, stop worrying about coconuts falling out of trees and taking aim at your head."

"Things are going good then?" He was a bit concerned Eliot would keep resisting but whatever happened must have changed something. Steve plans to get the full story later. "Yeah that works. I'll let the team know I'm taking Friday off again. Chin said it was nice and peaceful here last Friday so I'm sure they won't mind if I do so again, although I have no idea what he's trying to imply."

"Coconuts, pineapples, the jungle, sharks... Yeah, what's not to love." He rolls his eyes. Then he nods. "We're working on it. The distance is an issue." Might as well be honest about it. "I might be coming out here fairly often."

"It's not all that bad! Come on, admit it. Hawaii's not as bad as you first thought it was. It's grown on you." Steve has seen the change over the last couple of years anyway. Danny's not quite so high strung and he laughs a lot more now.

"I was kinda expecting that. Maybe on the weekends you don't have Grace you go there? Would that be enough?" He's not sure it would be for him, only a couple of days every other week, although talking on the phone and having Danny's scent does help. Eliot's not him though either. Steve hasn't really been without a guide except when Danny goes away. It could be argued that he was without before he realized Danny was a guide, but when he looks back on it, Danny was instinctually helping him when he needed it - they just didn't realize that's what was happening. "He's also welcome to come here. I know the military presence is daunting but they can be avoided as well."

"I don't think he wants to come to Hawaii. I've mentioned Catherine and even before that he wasn't very keen. But it is an option." He glances over at Eliot. "Maybe go to one of the more touristy islands and away from the military presence."

He shakes his head at Steve's insistence. "It is pretty, I'll give it that. Both the view of the ocean and the beaches..." Danny did not mind people wearing bikinis all the time.

Steve raises an eyebrow at that but remains quiet. In the grand scheme of things he understands Eliot's point of view but he doubts it will work if it's always Danny traveling to him. In any case it's not Steve's business. It's his role to be supportive and that's what he's committed to being.

"Are you saying you like the beaches now? Even with all that sand? Must be learning to surf that altered your view there."

Eliot knows it's not fair to expect Danny to do all the traveling, but he also knows he can't afford to end up back on anyone's radar for associating with someone who's known to associate with a military Sentinel. It could get them all attention they can't afford. Still-

"Could meet somewhere else," he offers. "Or Kaua'i could work." He's a little more reluctant about that. "I can foot the bill, money ain't a problem."

Danny is about to say something when Eliot speaks up and he nods. "We could. It would still restrict it to weekends but it would cut into the travel time." He smiles and reaches over to stroke Eliot's shoulder

"And it is less about the sand and more about the people."

"Not necessarily. I get requests from the other islands for our presence from time to time." Usually he can't justify splitting the team to send someone but if he's going to lend Danny out somewhere, to a neighboring island would be easier and make more sense than to the mainland. Easier for the team to have his back as well.

"If that's what gets you out there, partner, I'm not complaining." Little by little Danny seems to be coming around. If it takes the eye candy to have him get there and have a good time then Steve will take it.

"That is true. When that happens we could make sure Eliot knows so that he can join us if he wants. What do you think Eliot?" He glances over at the Sentinel. And he laughs at Steve's words. "On the other hand if it hadn't been for Hawaii I wouldn't have met you two so.." He'll accept some of the bad, but he'll still bitch.

"If you're sure. Weekend an' weekdays don't matter so much t'me, but I don't wanna get in the way'a things." More to the point, he knows himself well enough to know that if Danny were involved in anything dangerous, which is, after all, part of the job, and he were anywhere nearby he wouldn't be able to stay the hell out of it. Hell, he's not going to be able to stay out of it as it is, and he has every intention of making sure Hardison keeps tabs on whatever Danny's unit's involved in once he gets back home. Not to mention that he's also not sure just how things will work if they're all three in the same place at the same time.

Steve wouldn't send Danny without back-up, especially after what happened here, but he was thinking more of sending Chin or Kono. If Danny and Eliot are only getting a few days together a month, he thinks they'd likely prefer the alone time without Steve there as a distraction. After all, he has Danny most of the time. And honestly he's not sure about watching another sentinel be as close to Danny as he is.

"I'm sure we can figure something out to work there. Have it lead into a weekend, or out of one." Whoever goes with can leave early or arrive late. If he knew more about Eliot's background he'd be tempted to hire him on as a special consultant and then he could just work with Danny, but hiring a chef as a consultant would be a hard sell to the governor, even if the military career fifteen years ago was associated to Eliot's name.

"Good ideas. Not much we can do about it, we kind of need to wait until a case comes up and until then it is weekends and when it is slow." Danny shifts so he is sitting closer to Eliot and leans slightly on him.

He is less worried than his two Sentinels but he is also the one who knows both of them. "So the case... I told them to email you the file, there are some ties back to Hawaii, but nothing that needs immediate attention. Especially with the head of the operation here taken out."

Eliot had been trying to keep his distance, to not intrude too much on the conversation even if he can't bring himself to actually leave, but when Danny leans into him he gives it up and just settles solidly in next to him, turning a little to press his nose into his hair and curl one arm around his shoulders. He doesn't have anything else to contribute to the conversation, though, so he keeps quiet.

"Alright. I'll keep my eyes open for it and we'll take care of the stuff on this end. Is there anything I should know? Stuff that won't be in the file?" When Danny returns home he's hoping the other man will share all the details of what happened and Eliot's involvement but there's no need to go into all that over the phone. Steve will want and need to touch Danny to confirm that the other man is alright and since he can't the next three days will be hell.

Sometimes having sentinel hearing is a curse. He can hear Eliot's heartbeat and the sound of his breathing get louder, like Danny is closer to the other man. He can hear the brushing of fabric, the inhale of a breath and the brush of skin on skin. It doesn't take much for the picture to come to develop in his mind's eye. Danny is highly tactile and it only makes sense that he'll be just as tactile with Eliot. Eliot likely needs the touch just as much. He doesn't begrudge them of it, but it's not something he's quite ready to face head on. Knowing it is happening is one thing, hearing makes it all too real. His support is unwavering, but he needs more time to fully wrap his mind and heart around this change and addition to his life.

Clearing his throat, he forces a smile into his voice. "Alright, I should let you guys go. I'm sure you have a lot you want to discuss and work through, and I've got a couple things here I need to wrap up before I head out for the night."

"Nothing as far as I know. We can go over it on Friday. Unless Chin's upgrades mean the table won't listen to me again." He had grumbled a bit about that last time, though the rest of the team had just laughed and smiled.

"Alright. Take care babe, alright? I don't want to come there on Thursday and hear that you've gotten shot again or something." But he smiles fondly. "I'll be there soon. Miss you."
