PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
What skills does your character bring to the situation?:
Danny is a detective and has been for many years, with that comes knowledge of how to conduct an investigation, how to deal with emergencies as well as gun training. He is also used to leading a team, having been the guy in charge of the 5-0 task force when Steve is away. As a leader he is hands on and involved and he will gladly check up on those who work for him, this is something he does even when he is 'just' second in command in the task force.
He takes care of people and became a cop because he wants to keep people safe. That is something he'll bring with him. He is also loyal to a fault and once he has decided people are part of his family he will go to extremes to make sure they are happy and safe. In his canon this includes engaging in dangerous and in some cases illegal trips and activities. While I hope there will be less need for that in game he will still have that passion.
Why did you choose this specific character for 6I, and how do you picture them fitting into the game?
I think Danny could be a good fit because of the reasons listed above. I think it is also interesting to take a character from a modern setting like Danny and see how they deal with the loss of technology. Danny is not as dependent on technology as some but even then he is used to the convenience and being able to easily find information. Further more I think it will be interesting for him to deal with his skills not being immediately useful and for him to figure out how to best pull his weight. I think he will want to pick up a trade and I'd love to play out him being an apprentice and learning a trade.
One of the big reasons I love Danny in the series and why I like Hawaii 5-0 in general is because it is a lot about the idea of a found family or Ohana as Steve calls it in the show. Danny is very open and caring and I would love to play out him sort of collecting himself a family that he can not only take care of but also rely on when he has though times.
How do you imagine your character will survive in 6I, and in what ways will they contribute to the settlement, if any?
Danny would want to pull his weight in the community, and preferably in ways he is good at. He would be interested in trying to figure out whenever something bad happens and make sure that those that do wrong are brought to justice. He would also work hard to keep people safe from any disasters, natural or otherwise, that would happen. To him that is what being a cop is all about and on top of it being something he is good at, it would be a way for him to connect with his old life.
He would also most certainly try to take up a job. Being someone who is a good shot both with a gun and a bow and arrow, he would try to take up hunting. Danny is someone who has been raised in a city and never been very physical so he might not start out being very good at jobs that require some specialized knowledge like blacksmithing or tailoring. He is a decent cook and can help out in the kitchen and he would be interested in picking up a trade if anyone wants to have him as an apprentice.
Explain how your character would react to:
- Being separated, possibly permanently, from loved ones and their previous life, including loss of powers, if applicable:
It would hit Danny hard not to be able to be with his kids. Given that Steve McGarrett is in the game missing him would not be so much of an issue but he'd miss the rest of the team, especially Kono and Chin who he has worked with for years. The hardest part would be the kids. He moved to Hawaii so he could be a part of his daughter's life and he is willing to kill to protect them.
It will also be hard for him to accept that he has no control over the situation. At first it will remind him of when Rachel took their daughter and moved to Hawaii. Working with Steve he has also in many ways had to let go of control for himself, but he has also been more willing to fight to stay with his loved ones. He was fighting Rachel when she wanted to move away from Hawaii with Grace and thus force Danny to either give up his kid or his friends. In game he won't be able to fight, or if he does it won't have any effect and it will hit him hard. Depending a little on how the support network around him is he might continue trying to get back or he might completely fall apart. Either way he will most likely reach out to people, Danny is a people person and it is not his style to keep all of this inside, but rather he wants to talk about it to process it.
- Their environment being manipulated to prevent them leaving the area:
The environment being actively manipulated to mess with them and prevent them from leaving and in his case prevent him from being able to go home to his kid will be something he'll react to with first disbelief and then anger. Danny doesn't like being used as a pawn in games and he would try to figure out who is behind it and how he can get to them. Over the course of the years the 5-0 task force have several times been played with and Danny does not take it well. He has quite a bit of anger and he might snap at other people trying to reason with him when he has his worst moments. As mentioned above Danny is very open about his emotions, especially anger and frustration. After a while he might calm down about it, not quite giving up trying to figure out who is behind it but more realizing that figuring that out will be a long game rather than a short one.
- Being physically and/or mentally manipulated, such as having hallucinations or suddenly possessing special abilities they did not have before:
Continuing the theme of trying to figure out who is behind keeping them here and playing this game with them he might play along to see if it brings him closer to figuring it out. But he would not have an easy time with being mentally manipulated and he would have an even worse time seeing his friends go through it. He would want to take the burden from them if he could. When things happen is also when people can expect him to snap and get angry with them. Danny would get stressed by his friends being in distress or in danger and he reacts to stress by getting snappy and angry.
Getting actual powers would confuse him but I could actually see him enjoy them. Danny is a human with no special powers and being short and with a bad knee he also isn't the most physical person, especially compared to his partner. He might even show off a bit if the powers lend themselves to it. Then he would try to figure out how to work with the powers and how to use them to his advantage.
POWERS & SPECIAL ABILITIES
None. Danny is just your regular human
WRITING SAMPLES
Sample 1:
Here (AU with a couple of other characters.)
Sample 2: Scenario 1 of the Autumn TDM
Danny is a worrier and always has been, but this is giving him even more reason to be worried than normal. It had been a wet and cold summer which meant their crops had not been growing as well as expected and some had failed completely. There were almost no wild berries left and by this time last year their stores had been filled with jams and other preserved fruit and this year what they had would have to be saved for special occasions. It wasn't the lack of food that worried him as much as how hunger and scarcity tended to bring out people's bad sides.
Danny lifts the last of the pumpkins into the cart before heading back towards the houses. He does his best at hiding his worry but Danny Williams has never been a good liar, at least not to people he cares for. And he cares for the people here, that is why he is worried. His smile at the harvest feast isn't as real as it could be, and he makes sure to eat a little less than he has to. A few days later he grabs the bow he had gotten made and heads out into the woods. He might not be as well trained at tracking through the forest as some of the others but he does know how to shoot, he is hoping to put that skill to good use and make sure there is a bit more food in the larder.
Sample 3:
"There is no way this is going to work." Danny sighs as his partner once again completely ignores him. One thing is for sure, Steve is never going to change. Danny's met rocks more willing to change than his partner. "Hey, hey hey, listen to me babe, there is no way this is going to work." Danny reaches out to pull Steve back to face him. He knows that stubborn look on Steve's face but he also knows it is possible to get through to him. "Steve, listen, I know that bridge is the quickest way off here but it is also far too risky. Look at it, it looks like it wouldn't hold the weight of a child let alone the two of us." Danny gestures as he talks.
They had been on the way to interview a suspect when a mudslide had blocked the road. And thanks to Steve's 'shortcut' they were now stuck in the middle of nowhere with Danny's car half covered in mud. Steve had decided they could make their way down to a village he knew about and for the most part it had been alright. Except for this. The bridge that spanned the gorge was old and clearly not well maintained and it looked like it was only luck holding it up. "Steve, seriously, look at that drop. We won't survive a fall." Danny shakes his head as his partner argues that they have no other choice. "I don't want to do it." He tries to argue one last time, even though he knows Steve will win this argument.
