Danny is Steve's guide. He is still pretty new at it and working with a Sentinel who has some bad experiences. To top if off, while working a case in Portland he finds out that a guide can have more than one Sentinel who is their perfect match.

[It is late, later than he normally calls when Danny finally dials Steve's number. He's been wandering, having lost all appetite. He had even lied to Grace. Said stuff is going on with the case and he wouldn't really be able to talk.

He waits nervously for Steve to pick up. ]

Hi Steve. How are you doing? You busy?

[ Steve had been eyeing the clock waiting for Danny to call, not quite worried but concerned. The job has a way of running long and interfering with the perception of time and while he more than understands that, he can't help but wonder if it was one of the many hazards of the job that has delayed Danny. When the phone rings, he's relieved to see Danny's picture flash on the screen as the Bon Jovi ringtone fills the air. ]

Hey Danno... [ Instantly he can hear the stress in the other man's voice. He takes a second to increase his hearing but the sounds around him don't sound like a hospital or the station. ] What's wrong? Problems with the case?

Yeah, we lost the lead we had. But that is not it. I went to this pub after work and I ran into another Sentinel. He sniffed me right out.

[ Steve, who had been sitting out on the lanai with a beer is suddenly on his feet, the beer dropped from his hand, completely forgotten, now spilling into the sand. ]

Shit! Are you safe right now? Does he know who are? Did he hurt you?

Yes,yes, and no. He is ... well not exactly like you. But he isn't theirs anymore. He was terrified that I'd take him back. I could feel it. Just like I could feel I could trust him.

[ There's a relief there that Danny's safe and unharmed but he's still tense and keyed up. He should have gone with Danny. They only needed one and Steve had other commitments with the Governor but dammit! He starts to pace. ]

A scared sentinel isn't a good thing, Danny. They're unpredictable. Dangerous.

[ Thoughts of Danny dealing with a suddenly feral sentinel make Steve feel nauseated. On the flip side if this sentinel is attempting to stay under the radar himself, chances are he won't turn Danny in. That's at least a bit of a relief...

Steve works on the breathing exercises they often do when he gets too worked up. Increasing his hearing he focuses in on Danny's heartbeat and breathing and tries to match them. ]

Do you need backup? I can be on the next plane out. [ Although that may make things worse. ] Or Chin. [ He's a nice calming presence that Steve impeccably trusts to take care of Danny. ]

I don't think he has anyone. Well not a guide at least. He mentioned a hacker friend.

[ Taking in a deep breath, Steve holds it a moment while he tries to wrap his head around everything Danny's told him. ]

He knows who are you, so he could turn you in... You trust that he's not going to do that?

[ Steve needs to be sure. His ultimate goal is protecting Danny. The other man has no real idea what happens to sentinels and guides under the military's watch and Steve does not want him to have first hand experience. While guides are treated better, Danny won't tolerate what happens to the sentinels.

It's not hard for Steve to relate to this sentinel Danny's found. Being on his own had been extremely difficult. ]

Sounds like you left it on decent terms... Does he need help?

[ It's not like they have lots of resources but they do have some and if Five-O can help make this guys life easier, Steve will figure out how to do it without drawing attention to either. ]

Yeah. But I don't think he wants it. He didn't like what I did to him. Or how he reacted to me. He.... He did that thing with sticking his nose in behind my ear and smelling and it calmed him when he was almost zoning. Is it possible to have more than one match? He acted a lot like you do.

You're a strange guide, Danny, that's understandable. Guides aren't... You're not the standard type of guide we deal with in the military. If we hadn't of been close and already had the trust we did built, I would have likely responded the same way.

[ Steve had avoided telling Danny much about his experiences in the military and that included his training and his interactions with guides. It wasn't something that could be changed and he knew his partner would be horrified.

Danny's scent is definitely has a calming effect on Steve. ]

I... I don't know. They tried bonding with me, a couple times, but it never took. I'm not even sure there's a perfect match. It might just be a compatible thing like typical humans have when finding partners.

It's a higher level of connection between sentinel and guide. Once bonded, the one becomes more reliant on the other. [ Steve pauses. The way things were explained to him was much cruder. ] Like geese who bond and mate for life, but there are platonic bonded sentinel and guide pairs as well.

I don't know. I know with me the pull I feel towards you is the strongest I have ever felt.

[ Steve had his suspicions but that was all they were. ]

Did you get his name? Maybe I know him.

[ Steve wasn't going to do anything with it. There was no way he was going to turn in a fellow sentinel on the run, but if anything happened to Danny he wanted to know where to start looking. ]

He knows who you are and if he needs you he'll figure out how to find you. You've been in the news enough times, you're not hard to track down. [ There's a grin in Steve's voice about that.

His voice gets serious once more. ] If you see him again, give him a card. [ Might as well make it easy on him. ] Also, make sure he knows about me. I don't want him thinking that you're not protected, Danny. You are. And before you say you don't need protection, it's a sentinel thing. We are hardwired to protect our guides, even without the bond. [ He's not indicating in any way that Danny shouldn't help this sentinel, in fact just the opposite, but at the same time he doesn't want this sentinel getting the wrong idea or jumping to incorrect conclusions. It would be bad for all of them if that happened. ]

[ The tone in Steve's voice changes slightly. ]

Hawaii misses it's hot-headed haole! [ Meaning Steve missed him. ] Chin won't let me drive his car and hid the key to the grenade locker.

I didn't get his name, no. By the time I thought to ask I had already promised not to bother him again and I thought it would be weird if I asked him then. He works at the Bridgeport Brew Pub here. He wore an apron so I am guessing in the kitchen. But that is all I know.

And I told him about you. Actually that is one of the things I want to talk about. I didn't mention the name but... I said enough that it won't be hard to figure out who you are. Be careful if Catherine shows up, alright?

[He sighs, but there is a fondness in that smile.] You know the top drawer in my office, the one you have the code to? In the back there is a spare set of keys to the camero. Just make sure it is back at the airport and has a full tank of gas when I arrive, and you pay for any speeding tickets you get.

[ Steve nodded on the other side of the phone, even though Danny couldn't see him. If they did a background check on him, it would be flagged and Catherine notified. ]

Well you're working a case there. If she calls I'll tell her it's related to that. Hopefully that will stave off her coming to visit sooner than expected.

[ He couldn't do anything if she just showed up, but that could really happen at any time.

There's a grin that can easily be heard over the phone. ]

Would you be upset if I said I already had the Camaro? My truck is not meant for police work. Don't worry, I'll be there to pick you up. And Danny, I don't get speeding tickets! [ Not only could he outrun the cops, but they also knew who he was and now assumed he was speeding because of police business. Regardless why they left him alone it was a win for Steve. ]

Yeah they really should get on that. And how do you have the camaro already? I have the keys here except for that spare set... Shit, how long have you known about that spare set? I hate you, you know that?

[But Danny can't keep the smile from his voice even if he is trying to sound irritated.]

You'll be alright if she comes? Maybe make sure to always have Chin or Kono around? They can make sure she has to keep a low profile.

[ Steve chuckles lightly. ]

Danno, I have no idea what you are talking about.

My truck has it's purposes. We don't need another sports car. The three of you have that taken care of. Besides, why would I need one when I have the Camaro?

[ The humor is Steve's voice fades as he considers Catherine visiting. Danny's thought is a good one but not practical. Catherine expects certain things from him and those can't happen with Chin and/or Kono present. ]

I'll be fine, Danny. Nothing to worry about.

[ Steve wonders if Danny can feel his trepidation over the phone. ]

[Then at least that would be taken care of. Of course it would have to be someone alright with her boyfriend living with and often sleeping in the same bed as another guy.]

What exactly is the use of your truck if we always use my car?

[ Steve blinks at that. Trying to explain his situation to an unknown female is not something he has any interest in doing. ]

You really want to complicate matters even more than they already are?!

[ He's not certain how Catherine would respond if Steve said he wanted to remove the sexual aspect of their relationship. Or for that matter how the military would respond. Maybe if he could convince the military to let him go completely. Retire out. Until he has a reason it's not worth thinking about, and he's not actively looking for female companionship. Especially not with his issues. ]

My truck is good for moving heavy or a lot of things, or if we need to go off road. You'd never allow me to put all the things I needed to do repairs on the house in the back of the Camaro. That's where the truck comes in.

That's just nonsense, man! A classic car, or a sports car like the Camaro, wants to be driven, Danny. It deserves to be handled the way it was meant to be. Not to be babied and soft-handed. You wanna car like that, maybe consider a Cadillac or a Lincoln.

[ There's amusement in his voice as he states those 'facts'. Anything to get Danny riled up... Not that he doesn't believe them though too. ]

I don't baby the camaro, I drive it like it is supposed to be done, like how you are supposed to drive, not like some ... teenager who suddendly got some serious power under him. I know how to drive Steve. You know that. No way I would have lasted this long in New Jersey if I didn't.

That's not how I drive. She likes to be opened up, Danny, to work with the road under her and to be pushed to the limit. [ There's a clear grin in his voice. ] We catch the bad guys don't we? In the process we haven't been in or caused any serious accidents.

Besides... Driving in Jersey and driving in Hawaii isn't the same. Should we ever find ourselves in Jersey, you can drive. How's that?

I am going to need that in writing. [And he is going to frame it and hang it in the office.] Besides, you can push her to the limit without doing it like a wild animal. I'll show you when we get back. It is all about staying in control and within the rules of the road. Rules I am pretty damn sure you never learned. Driving should be fun, not something where I have to pray to god not to die every few miles.
