It's a higher level of connection between sentinel and guide. Once bonded, the one becomes more reliant on the other. [ Steve pauses. The way things were explained to him was much cruder. ] Like geese who bond and mate for life, but there are platonic bonded sentinel and guide pairs as well.

I don't know. I know with me the pull I feel towards you is the strongest I have ever felt.

[ Steve had his suspicions but that was all they were. ]

Did you get his name? Maybe I know him.

[ Steve wasn't going to do anything with it. There was no way he was going to turn in a fellow sentinel on the run, but if anything happened to Danny he wanted to know where to start looking. ]

He knows who you are and if he needs you he'll figure out how to find you. You've been in the news enough times, you're not hard to track down. [ There's a grin in Steve's voice about that.

His voice gets serious once more. ] If you see him again, give him a card. [ Might as well make it easy on him. ] Also, make sure he knows about me. I don't want him thinking that you're not protected, Danny. You are. And before you say you don't need protection, it's a sentinel thing. We are hardwired to protect our guides, even without the bond. [ He's not indicating in any way that Danny shouldn't help this sentinel, in fact just the opposite, but at the same time he doesn't want this sentinel getting the wrong idea or jumping to incorrect conclusions. It would be bad for all of them if that happened. ]

[ The tone in Steve's voice changes slightly. ]

Hawaii misses it's hot-headed haole! [ Meaning Steve missed him. ] Chin won't let me drive his car and hid the key to the grenade locker.

I didn't get his name, no. By the time I thought to ask I had already promised not to bother him again and I thought it would be weird if I asked him then. He works at the Bridgeport Brew Pub here. He wore an apron so I am guessing in the kitchen. But that is all I know.

And I told him about you. Actually that is one of the things I want to talk about. I didn't mention the name but... I said enough that it won't be hard to figure out who you are. Be careful if Catherine shows up, alright?

[He sighs, but there is a fondness in that smile.] You know the top drawer in my office, the one you have the code to? In the back there is a spare set of keys to the camero. Just make sure it is back at the airport and has a full tank of gas when I arrive, and you pay for any speeding tickets you get.

[ Steve nodded on the other side of the phone, even though Danny couldn't see him. If they did a background check on him, it would be flagged and Catherine notified. ]

Well you're working a case there. If she calls I'll tell her it's related to that. Hopefully that will stave off her coming to visit sooner than expected.

[ He couldn't do anything if she just showed up, but that could really happen at any time.

There's a grin that can easily be heard over the phone. ]

Would you be upset if I said I already had the Camaro? My truck is not meant for police work. Don't worry, I'll be there to pick you up. And Danny, I don't get speeding tickets! [ Not only could he outrun the cops, but they also knew who he was and now assumed he was speeding because of police business. Regardless why they left him alone it was a win for Steve. ]

Yeah they really should get on that. And how do you have the camaro already? I have the keys here except for that spare set... Shit, how long have you known about that spare set? I hate you, you know that?

And why don't get a better car yourself?

[But Danny can't keep the smile from his voice even if he is trying to sound irritated.]

You'll be alright if she comes? Maybe make sure to always have Chin or Kono around? They can make sure she has to keep a low profile.

[ Steve chuckles lightly. ]

Danno, I have no idea what you are talking about.

My truck has it's purposes. We don't need another sports car. The three of you have that taken care of. Besides, why would I need one when I have the Camaro?

[ The humor is Steve's voice fades as he considers Catherine visiting. Danny's thought is a good one but not practical. Catherine expects certain things from him and those can't happen with Chin and/or Kono present. ]

I'll be fine, Danny. Nothing to worry about.

[ Steve wonders if Danny can feel his trepidation over the phone. ]

[Danny shakes his head. Of course he can feel it.]

We should get you a girlfriend.

[Then at least that would be taken care of. Of course it would have to be someone alright with her boyfriend living with and often sleeping in the same bed as another guy.]

What exactly is the use of your truck if we always use my car?

[ Steve blinks at that. Trying to explain his situation to an unknown female is not something he has any interest in doing. ]

You really want to complicate matters even more than they already are?!

[ He's not certain how Catherine would respond if Steve said he wanted to remove the sexual aspect of their relationship. Or for that matter how the military would respond. Maybe if he could convince the military to let him go completely. Retire out. Until he has a reason it's not worth thinking about, and he's not actively looking for female companionship. Especially not with his issues. ]

My truck is good for moving heavy or a lot of things, or if we need to go off road. You'd never allow me to put all the things I needed to do repairs on the house in the back of the Camaro. That's where the truck comes in.

No, I don't want them complicated but I don't want to give her any more reason to be around you.

That trash-heap as you so wrongly call it is a classic car, Daniel. There's a huge difference between the Marquis and the Camaro. [ He may sound annoyed but there's affection and amusement behind the words. ] It saddens me that you don't see that. I feel for you, man, I really do.

[ He clears his throat. ] Besides, I still haven't figured out why she won't go more than ten miles before choking out...

I know, I know. [ He has many rants about Catherine, Steve's heard some of them. He hates it when people hurt or use Steve. ]

Yes the difference is that one of them work. And maybe she doesn't do it because you're driving. I bet you're too hard on her, driving around like a caveman.

That's just nonsense, man! A classic car, or a sports car like the Camaro, wants to be driven, Danny. It deserves to be handled the way it was meant to be. Not to be babied and soft-handed. You wanna car like that, maybe consider a Cadillac or a Lincoln.

[ There's amusement in his voice as he states those 'facts'. Anything to get Danny riled up... Not that he doesn't believe them though too. ]

I don't baby the camaro, I drive it like it is supposed to be done, like how you are supposed to drive, not like some ... teenager who suddendly got some serious power under him. I know how to drive Steve. You know that. No way I would have lasted this long in New Jersey if I didn't.

That's not how I drive. She likes to be opened up, Danny, to work with the road under her and to be pushed to the limit. [ There's a clear grin in his voice. ] We catch the bad guys don't we? In the process we haven't been in or caused any serious accidents.

Besides... Driving in Jersey and driving in Hawaii isn't the same. Should we ever find ourselves in Jersey, you can drive. How's that?

I am going to need that in writing. [And he is going to frame it and hang it in the office.] Besides, you can push her to the limit without doing it like a wild animal. I'll show you when we get back. It is all about staying in control and within the rules of the road. Rules I am pretty damn sure you never learned. Driving should be fun, not something where I have to pray to god not to die every few miles.

[ He laughs again. ]

Driving is fun. And you only do that when we're in a high speed chase, and even then I think you're exaggerating!

I promise I am not Steve. And I only do it out loud when we're in a highspeed chase. I know that look you get in your eyes. That is the look that says I am about to be scared shitless.

[ Steve raises an amused eyebrow, but then chews on his bottom lip suddenly uncertain. One thing Steve is lacking is personal skills. He's always taken Danny's complaining as just something Danny does, but is he really that scared. ]

But... You keep giving me the keys... Allowing me to drive...?

[ True Steve generally asks for them or steals them, but there are times Danny hands them over as well. Has he been that badly misreading the situation. ]

I've given up fighting by now.

[ But the uncertainty gets to him and his voice softens. ]

Most of the time it is fine, Steve, sometimes you go a bit overboard but as you said, usually during a chase or something.

[ The Navy had the responsibility of teaching Steve how to drive, first in boarding school at 16 and then the various advanced lessons such as performance and combat, throughout his career. To say Steve is well trained is an understatement, and he enjoys using his driving skills in the field. It's never his intention however to actually scare his passengers. That they often argue during a high speed chase, Steve had always assumed was Danny's way of dealing with the excitement and thrill of it, but if Steve was actually scaring him... It's not like they could stop engaging in high speed chases, they were law enforcement, but Steve would work on containing the pleasure he found in them. Maybe that would help. ]

You? Give up fighting? [ He chuckles disbelievingly at Danny. ] That'll be the day!

[ Quiet a moment his voice gets more serious. Message received and understood. ] I'll try to tone it down. [ A touch of humor comes back into it. ] Don't want to break your puking record after all.

That would be good yeah. I would very much not like to break it.

[ Danny's voice softens. ]

Thank you. You going to take care while I am gone? Because if you end up in hospital I have to take over as the boss and you know how much Chin and Kono will love that.

[ Steve shuddered at the thought of being in the hospital. Generally, they weren't set up for Sentinels, so there was no considerations to amount of noise and smells. Steve has to take precautions before visiting, being admitted, especially without Danny, would surely have him zoning out. ]

I'll be fine, Danny. No need to worry. Just finish up this case, eh? And you be careful too. None of us are there to watch your back.

[ Added as an after thought. ] Maybe I should send Chin... [ He knows Danny is a good cop, generally by the book when He isn't around, but Steve is his partner, it's his job to worry and make sure his partner is always covered. ]

[He sighs and then shifts.]
Listen, babe, it is getting late and I have to be up early tomorrow. I'll be back soon, I promise.

I'm taking that as a promise, Danny. Don't do anything stupid. [ There's a very small pause. ] That's my job!

[ With an eye to his watch he nods even though he knows Danny can't see him. ]

Right. Sleep well, Danno. I'm holding you to that.
